Open Water Swimming Club

About
The Open Water Swimming Club (OWSC) aims to promote open water swimming around the world and to bring open water swimmers from around the world together.

We live by our slogan: “Open water swimming -anytime, anywhere”

The Netherlands takes pride of place in the history of open water swimming. Herman Willemse, Judith de Nijs, Johan Schans and Jan van Scheijndel (the latter now deceased) were among the early pioneers of the sport in the 60s. In the 80s Ton Brouwer, Irene van der Laan, and Monique Wildschut competed and triumphed in many international OWS events. Edith van Dijk celebrated major successes in the 90s. In 2008 Maarten van der Weijden impressed the world with his Olympic gold medal in the 10k event. These days Ferry Weertman, Sharon van Rouwendaal and Marcel Schouten are successfully defending the Dutch colours in OWS events around the world.

However it is clear that the prominence of Dutch open water swimmers of the past has been reduced to a more modest trickle of intermittent successes. This is why we hope to contribute to a revival of open water swimming in the Netherlands.
