The Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God is a non-profit international cooperation organisation, which has been present in 55 countries on 5 continents for more than 500 years, through care centres, hospitals, health centres, research, bioethics centres and social service foundations.
In Spain, the Order has a network of more than 80 health, social, socio-health, teaching, bioethics and research centres, serving almost two million people annually. It is made up of 178 friars, 18,000 professionals, around 3,500 volunteers and numerous donors and benefactors.
At the end of 2014, in response to the desire to have a presence in the social sphere of the Balearic Islands, the San Juan de Dios Servicios Sociales Mallorca Foundation was set up with the aim of promoting social action. Specifically, the Foundation focuses on the creation and management of shelter spaces for the most disadvantaged people in order to improve their situation and ensure their social integration. At the same time, it acts preventively in tasks aimed at people at risk of social exclusion, bearing in mind at all times the charism inspired by the Hospitalet Order of Saint John of God and its guiding values.
"Es Convent" is defined as a temporary residential shelter service for single parent or two-parent families with minor children in situations of social difficulty due to a lack of economic and employment resources and gender violence. The centre offers accommodation, food, hygiene and all the necessary means to normalise their coexistence, providing the necessary intervention for the social and work reintegration of all the members of the family, paying special attention to the wellbeing of the children in care. The aim is to provide comprehensive care to promote childcare and parental autonomy at all levels.
